Welcome To Our Big D Climb Team Fundraising Page.
We will be participating in the Big D Climb on Saturday, January 27, 2018. Please support our team with a donation. Our efforts will help make a big difference in the fight against blood cancers.
What is the Big D Climb?
The Big D Climb is a stair climb up 70 stories of Bank of America Plaza in Downtown Dallas. Although it will be challenging, it pales in comparison to what blood cancer patients go through. All proceeds benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
2018 Big D Climb Honored Hero
In 2015, Makenzi was your normal active teenager who loved going to school, hanging out with friends, singing in the choir, cheering and playing basketball for her Junior High and AAU teams. During the Christmas Break, Makenzi was practicing with her team and she started having soreness in her armpit and a low grade fever. Being active, she was used to her body being sore but this felt different. In January, 2106 Makenzi caught pneumonia, which we later found out was one of the first signs of her disease. She fought that hard ,and when she did not recover as she was expected, they did further tests. On March 23rd, 2016 Makenzi was diagnosed with Stage 4, Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, non-Hodgkins (ALCL). During her 6 rounds of intense chemotherapy, which had her in the hospital for 1 week then at home recovering for 2 weeks before starting it all over again, Makenzi was focused on only two things: being positive and doing all the steps to get through each round. “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have,” became her inner motivation.
While recovering at home between her treatments, many times she would go to the basketball court to work out, not only to keep her body moving forward but her mind as well. While in the hospital, Makenzi built a bond with many younger patients who were going through treatments, helping them to stay positive and helping them smile on the good and bad days. On August 16, 2016, Makenzi was classified in remission and her port was removed 3 days prior to her first day of her Freshman year at Sachse High School. Today, she is a strong, smart and beautiful Sophomore doing all the things she loves while being an advocate for LLS. She and her family have participated in the Light the Night Walk and Strikes Against Cancer baseball tournament. Makenzi speaks to individuals and groups about her experience to motivate patients and their families, and to bring awareness to the fight against lymphoma, leukemia, and all cancer. Makenzi’s career goal is to become an Oncology Physician’s Assistant to continue to help others. She is honored to be a 2018 Bid D Climb Honored Hero.
